The aerial basemap is the starting reference of the Land Use Inventory.
The second stage with the Crop Data Layer (CDL). The CDL provides an estimate of the crop type using Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR). The LIDAR data needs to be verified for overall accuracy.
In order to have an accurate data set, all tax parcels need to be reviewed. The result shows that the actual agricultural area is different from the initial calculations from the CDL and LIDAR.

Updates to the Land Use Inventory occur every five years in Dane County. The inventory data set is extensive and is used to document urban and rural land changes. The agricultural data set is used to determine agricultural crop types and is used to calculate the areas of urban expansion. Identifying the agricultural crop type starts with an aerial image, the tax parcels are altered to represent actual agricultural land use. The final product is an improved data set that accurately represents the current land use for the entire county.
